What Is a Weighted Grade Calculator?

A weighted grade calculator helps students calculate their overall course grade by considering different categories (assignments, quizzes, tests, exams) and their respective weights. Unlike simple averaging, weighted grading assigns different importance levels to various components of your course.

For example, a final exam worth 40% of your grade has more impact than homework worth 10%. This calculator multiplies each category's percentage by its weight, then sums them to give your accurate final grade.

How to Use the Grade Calculator

Step 1: Enter Categories

List all graded categories (assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, finals) and their weights as specified in your course syllabus.

Step 2: Add Scores

Enter points earned and total possible points for each category. The calculator will compute the percentage for each.

Step 3: Calculate

Click "Calculate Grade" to see your weighted average, letter grade, and GPA with a detailed breakdown of each category's contribution.

Step 4: Plan Ahead

Use the What-If Calculator to determine what scores you need on remaining assignments or finals to achieve your desired grade.

Understanding Weighted vs. Unweighted Grades

Weighted Grading (Most Common)

Different categories have different importance levels. A final exam might be 40% while homework is only 10% of your final grade.

Example:
Homework: 100% (10 weight) = 10 points
Final: 80% (40% weight) = 32 points
Total: 42/50 = 84% final grade

Unweighted Grading (Simple Average)

All categories count equally. The final grade is just the average of all category percentages.

Example:
Homework: 100%
Final: 80%
Total: (100 + 80) ÷ 2 = 90% final grade
